Hillington today is a small village straddling the A148 road between Kings Lynn, (c.11km to the southwest) and Fakenham (c.20km to the northeast) in north Norfolk. The village sits at between 20m and 25m OD on both mudstone and chalk bedrock.
The 15th century church of St Mary is set south of the A148, which would have been along the original main road between Hillington and Grimston. The village was recorded in the Domesday Book as Helingetuna which is believed to mean ‘the farmstead of the family or followers of a mall called Hythla or Hydla’.
