In the 2011-12 season of Discovery Days, Access Cambridge Archaeology (ACA) hosted 324 students from 29 different schools from across the Eastern region for classroom-based extension learning courses at the University of Cambridge. Discovery Days apply archaeological concepts in new and exciting ways to curriculum subjects including History, Geography & Science. They provide young people aged 11-15 (school years 7-10) with an opportunity to visit one of the world’s leading research institutions to apply and stretch their existing knowledge and intelligence in a series of hands-on group activities.
In this year’s feedback, 95% of participants said that they would recommend the courses to others, with comments including “it is really interesting and I have learnt a huge amount from the day” and “the activities were varied and offered insight into the subject. It was INTERESTING!” When asked about the statement “I learned a lot from the day”, 93% of participants strongly agreed or agreed, and 95% strongly agreed or agreed with the statement “this course has improved my understanding of this subject”. Staff thought that the days were “really well structured, with skills being built upon each session” and offered “a high level of skills, knowledge and developing understanding, making use of the expertise and resources of the university”.
